I believe that most people want what’s best for their families first, whats best for themselves second and whats best for others, last.
I believe that this way of thinking makes sense. This way of thinking is a defense mechanism meant for the act of love, protection and carrying on the blood line. This way of thinking is what has driven us as a species.
But I believe that this way of thinking has become so ingrained in our collective conscious, that through this model, some people are actually putting our families, ourselves and others in danger. Some people are actually seeking out and acting in ways that are contrary to our primary belief systems.
What am I talking about? I’m talking about people not only defending our own self destruction, but actively pursuing that destruction.
People who are otherwise normal, tax paying, vital members of our society… Leaders of religion, teachers, soccer moms, factory workers, friends, neighbors and loved ones, care more for their own consumptive lifestyles or are so afraid of change, that they cant see the forest for the trees.
I believe that anyone who is even casually propagating the myth that man made Climate Change is either a hoax or untrue, is actively involved in the promotion of current human suffering and future devastation to our planet and humanity.
These are harsh words, and one hell of an accusation, but let me explain.
We have become a lazy, frightened and obese nation. We know that have become addicted to the sensual-ism of our own lives. We’ve become obese because feeling good now, is more important than losing the last 10 years of our lives to obesity related disease. In addition, parents who honestly love their children will purchase food and drinks that are directly responsible to the detriment of those very childrens lives.
We eat ourselves into disease, we drink ourselves into alcoholism, we shop ourselves into paralyzing debt, but it feels so damn good while we’re doing it.
Why should acceptance of man made climate change be any different? There are a few reasons why people refuse to accept the scientific data.
1. I believe that we are afraid of change. We fear what we don’t understand.
2. I believe that we have come out against it in the past. To have a moment of epiphany, or understanding or acceptance would be to admit fault in ourselves. It would mean that we were wrong. We can never admit that we are wrong, even when we know that we are.
3. I believe that we lead consumptive and sensual lives that would be in jeopardy, were we to admit that man made climate change is real. We know that Co2 is the leading cause and we know that our lifestyles create excess levels of that co2. If we admit that we are to blame, that would mean putting an extra blanket on the bed while turning down the heat at night. It would mean going to the farmers market instead of to the grocery store. It would mean using real dishes and cloth napkins instead of paper plates and paper towels.
4. I believe that many of us work in an industry that is responsible for the production or consumption of a co2 producing product. We build SUV’s, we work for the oil or coal industry, we tend bar on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship.
5. I believe that we identify ourselves with a peer group which denies the existence of man made Climate Change. (Think politics and religion)
6. I believe that we can not admit, even to ourselves, that we could be responsible for the huge consequences of the problem, if such a problem were to exist. We continue to insist “I am not guilty.”
7. I believe that we have been raised to believe that we have a sense of entitlement. “I am an American, ergo, if you tell me I am wrong or ask me to change, then you are taking away my freedoms.”
I believe that all of these things are wrong.
What do you believe?
